Go2Group Advises Major E-Commerce Firm on Perforce Performance

Go2Group, a leader in the field of Software Production Line Automation (SPLA), was engaged to assist a major e-commerce firm with the resolution of I/O bottlenecks for their Perforce database. This customer had a development team of over 590 users in a globally distributed development environment.

Perforce performance was suffering due to the high number of concurrent users. Performance issues were particularly acute at "rush hours", when users in remote development sites in Eastern Europe were still busy, and U.S.-based developers were ramping up to peak activity. A detailed analysis of the server's performance characteristics revealed that metadata accesses were the cause of Perforce performance issues. The customer corroborated their analysis by working with Perforce support.

After determining that the problem was caused by insufficient I/O capacity, the customer started looking for solutions that improve I/O performance and eventually settled on a trial of solid state disk systems. An initial evaluation proved successful, and solid state disks were brought in to accelerate the application.

The overall performance improvement was quite drastic due to the exceptional throughput and low latency of the solid state disk.
