Key takeaways from Atlassian Summit 2016

We’re just recovering from Atlassian Summit, which was held through the greater part of last week. If you weren’t there in person, well, you missed out on a lot! Let’s recap everything that was announced:

Product Announcements

Jira Service Desk

Up until now, Jira Service Desk was used predominantly by internal IT teams. However, a lot of customers, including we at Go2Group, found a lot of value in extending this functionality past IT teams to customers for an effective support system. At Summit, Atlassian announced they are extending Service Desk capabilities to support external customers as well. Service Desk now allows customers to have input in product development apart from being able to channel customer feedback to product teams. Some of the new features include:
  • Grouping customers into organizations
  • Personalizing emails sent to customers
  • Enhanced knowledge integration to supercharge customer support

Confluence 6.0 with concurrent editing capabilities is now available to everyone. Read more about it here.


HipChat Data Center is now in beta, making it possible to extend HipChat to all your teams on your own infrastructure without worrying about scaling or performance issues. Shortly before Summit, Atlassian also released completely rebuilt video capabilities and screen sharing available to all your teams. Read more here.


Atlassian is making huge strides forward with Bitbucket. Source code in the cloud was unthinkable a few years ago. However, teams are rapidly adopting Bitbucket Cloud and hosting their source code in the cloud. At Summit, Atlassian made more exciting announcements to help teams manage code with Bitbucket. Some of these include:
  • Pipelines – build, deploy, and test from within Bitbucket
  • Git Large File Storage
  • Smart Mirroring
  • Merge Checks

Data Center

As more organizations switch to the Atlassian stack, scalability and reliability is always a concern. Data Center has proven to be the perfect solution for enterprises using Atlassian products. Highlights of the Data Center improvements include:
  • Easy deployment on AWS
  • SAML single sign-on for Data Center
  • Zero downtime upgrades on Jira Software Data Center

Atlassian hosted its annual Women in Tech event aimed at discussing current issues, fostering networking, and committing to the success of women in the tech industry.

Shipit Live

Atlassian hosts 24 hour Shipit days every quarter. At Summit, the time had finally come to announce the winner of the project showcase.

Summit Bash

Atlassian knows to throw a party, and this year was no less. Summit had everything from live bands, Karaoke, and DJ Kanban on the decks to delicious food and bottomless drinks!

Customer success story presentations:

A couple of our customers presented at Summit as well. Dr. Vladimir Belorusets, Senior QA Manager from Bluescape, spoke about the efficiencies of having a test management system right inside Jira. Bluescape has been a long time user of our synapseRT add-on for Jira. You can learn more about synapseRT here. Chris Warnke, Senior Engineer from IGT, has been using ConnectALL to unify their systems. IGT is seeing improved DevOps efficiencies through integrating HPE ALM and Jira Software.
